Fat Ladies for R29.99
Don’t be fooled by the “XXL” screw-off lid on this 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon/ Merlot ruby-coloured blend, it does live up to the description, “voluptuously tempting and crammed with fun”. I would’ve preferred a cork, but I think they are trying to make a no-fuss point. By its nature I assume it’s for immediate consumption, the label doesn’t say.
The first impression is a dry and tangy sensation on the tongue but the Merlot does well to smooth over the tannic Cab Sav curves. The flavour is delightfully piquant and smoky, with hints of coffee and ripe berries, leaving an assertive full-figured aftertaste. These Fat Ladies call for chicken, lamb, steak, a hearty stew, spicy curry, or even a meaty pasta dish; and nicely finished off with after-dinner coffee.
You can find Fat Ladies Cabernet Sauvignon/ Merlot 2005 at your local supermarket or liquor store for R29.99, I did. Just look for the fun blue and silver labelling, with a painting of a fat lady in a blue dress holding a bunch of flowers and accompanied by two cats.
PS: May be too dry and spicy for the semi-sweet tooth…
