Fleur du Cap shines at Veritas

Wednesday, October 17th, 2007

Fleur du Cap has once again swept the board at the annual Veritas Awards, South Africa’s largest wine competition, with a total medal tally of 23 for its ultra premium Unfiltered and regular wines – one double gold, five gold, eight silver and 9 bronze medals – reaping the rewards of the sheer dedication by the devoted team of winemakers.

Fleur du Cap red wines are back in the forefront after the excellent achievements of the whites in recent years, with the Fleur du Cap Unfiltered Merlot 2004 excelling as one of only 44 wines out of a record 1 904 entrants to be awarded a double gold medal.

The three red wines that attained gold status are the exclusive signature blend, Fleur du Cap Laszlo 2004, the newly released Fleur du Cap Unfiltered Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 and its previous vintage the Fleur du Cap Unfiltered Cabernet Sauvignon 2004. On the white wine front, the Fleur du Cap Noble Late Harvest 2007 and the Fleur du Cap Unfiltered Viognier Limited Release 2005 both also clinched gold medals.

Fleur du Cap’s success at the 2007 Veritas Awards, the wine industry’s most authoritative quality guideline, is the result of a team approach at The Bergkelder that starts with meticulous vineyard selection and is driven by an overriding passion for winemaking.

The double gold medallist, Fleur du Cap Unfiltered Merlot 2004, is made of grapes selected from a vineyard in Somerset West and a 12-year old vineyard in the Bottelary region.

“This marvellous wine has an intense and concentrated ruby red colour with rich plum and blackcurrant aromas infused with gentle vanilla whiffs. On the palate this medium-bodied wine displays fresh, lively berry fruit flavours with hints of vanilla and a distinctive aftertaste,” is how Justin Corrans, Fleur du Cap red winemaker, describes this winning wine.

This succulent Merlot is perfect with Parma ham, roast lamb kebabs and hearty oxtail or robust Italian dishes. Fleur du Cap Unfiltered Merlot 2004 retails at around R80.00 per bottle.

Fleur du Cap wine lovers can taste the double gold and gold winners at the following Veritas Wine tastings:
·         Cape Town – 18 October 2007, Cape Sun Southern Sun

WINEX – The Rand Merchant Bank Wine Festival

Thursday, October 4th, 2007

Gauteng’s wine lovers should diarise RMB WineX in Sandton on Tuesday 23 to Friday 26 October.

With the greatest number of established and new wineries under one roof, WineX is South Africa’s most important wine festival and the largest in the southern hemisphere. As in 2006, visitors can also purchase most of the 1 500 offerings on show through the Shop@Show retail facility – via Norman Goodfellows – with wines delivered direct to your door.Sponsored by Rand Merchant Bank and partnered by British Airways Comair, Business Day and The Weekender and in association with Talk Radio 702, WineX offers wine lovers the opportunity to experience the many Cape wine routes over four days. With the help of the show’s cultivar guide, ardent wine tasters can pursue ‘varietal routes’ through the vast array of producers.

For the less studious, WineX is simply the wine event of the year, where winemakers show off their prize offerings – from award-winning blockbusters to the lesser-known rare wines from boutique cellars and organic producers – within the social buzz of Sandton.

Hand-crafted cheese, olives and olive oils will also be on offer, and for the discerning consumer, imported and local wine accessories and glassware will also be on sale.
