Cape Town and Johannesburg wine lovers can once again sample around 90 of the country’s best wines from 58 producers – as judged at the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show 2009. Public tastings held during the first fortnight of June will celebrate the Cape Winelands’ top achievers as the trophy, gold and silver award winning wines selected from 40 wine entry classes – ranging from exquisite Sauvignon Blancs to supreme Ports – will be showcased. The public tastings come hot on the heels of the awards announcement on 1 June when the Best White and Best Red Wines of the year are unveiled, as well as the Discovery of the Show – the best value wine of the year.
The pinnacle of the show, the Most Successful Producer Trophy, is awarded annually to the producer achieving the most number of medal winners picked from the near 1 000 competition entries. Over the show’s seven years, five top producer winners have come to the fore: South Africa’s heritage winery Nederburg took the podium in 2008 and the highly acclaimed Cape Point Vineyards, Vergelegen, Diemersfontein and De Trafford in previous years. Once again, the announcement of the 2009 Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show Most Successful Producer just before the public tastings will add to the excitement at these events.
